Why won't my washing machine drain and how do I fix it?

Check for a blocked filter, kinked hose or clogged pump before calling a technician.
A washing machine that will not drain is usually caused by a blocked filter, a kinked drain hose or a clogged pump. Always unplug the machine first.
Have towels and a shallow tray ready because water will come out.
Check the hose
Make sure the drain hose is not kinked, crushed or blocked, and that it is fitted at the right height.
Clean the filter
Most machines have a small door at the bottom front. Drain the water into a tray, unscrew the filter, remove lint, coins and debris and refit it.
Still not working?
The pump or a control fault may need replacing. Contact a technician or the manufacturer.
