Why is my fridge not cooling and what can I do?

Check the temperature setting, door seals, airflow and coils before assuming it is broken.

A fridge that is not cold enough may have a simple problem. Check the basics before calling a technician, because food safety matters.

Move perishable food to a cooler if it stays warm for long.

Simple checks

Make sure the temperature dial is set correctly, the door closes fully and the seal is clean and not cracked. Do not overpack the shelves, which blocks airflow.

Clean the coils

Unplug the fridge and gently vacuum the condenser coils at the back or underneath so heat can escape.

When to call for help

If the compressor runs constantly, the fridge is noisy or frost builds up, a technician may be needed.
