How do I unblock a toilet?

A flange plunger and steady pressure clear most toilet blockages.
Most toilet blockages can be cleared with a plunger and a bit of patience. Use a flange plunger, which seals better in a toilet bowl than a flat sink plunger.
Do not flush again if the bowl is already close to full.
Steps
Put on gloves, make sure there is enough water to cover the plunger cup, seal it over the hole and push and pull firmly for 15 to 20 seconds. Repeat until the water drains.
If that fails
Try a toilet auger (closet snake). A squirt of dish soap and hot (not boiling) water can help soften the blockage.
Avoid harsh chemicals
Strong drain cleaners can damage pipes and are dangerous if they splash. If several fixtures are backing up, the main drain may be blocked and you need a professional.
