How do I unblock a kitchen or bathroom sink?
Start with hot water and a plunger, then clean the trap before reaching for chemicals.
Slow or blocked sinks are usually caused by grease, hair and soap residue. Start with the simplest fixes and move on only if needed.
Block the overflow hole with a damp cloth when plunging so the pressure goes down the drain.
Quick fixes
Pour hot water down the drain, then plunge firmly. A mixture of baking soda followed by vinegar, then hot water after a few minutes, can loosen light build-up.
Clean the trap
Place a bucket under the U-bend, unscrew the trap by hand or with a wrench, empty it and clean it, then reconnect it.
Prevention
Use a hair catcher, wipe greasy pans before washing and flush drains with hot water weekly. Call a plumber if the blockage keeps returning.
