How do I set boundaries in a relationship?

State what you need clearly and calmly, and follow through consistently.
Boundaries are limits that protect your wellbeing, such as how you want to be spoken to, how much time you need alone or what you are comfortable with. Healthy partners respect them.
Boundaries are not ultimatums; they describe what you will do to take care of yourself.
How to set one
Be specific and calm: "I need us to take a break when we are shouting, then come back to talk." Explain why if helpful.
Follow through
A boundary only works if you act on it. If it is crossed, repeat it and take the stated action.
Expect adjustment
A caring partner may need time to adapt but will try. Repeated disrespect is a red flag.
