How do I patch a hole in drywall?
Small holes need filler; larger holes need a patch kit or a cut-in piece of board.
Small holes from nails or screws can be filled with a lightweight filler. Larger holes need a patch to give the filler something to hold onto.
Match the finish to the surrounding wall so the repair disappears after painting.
Small holes
Scrape off loose material, press filler in with a putty knife, let it dry, sand smooth and paint.
Medium holes
Use a self-adhesive mesh patch over the hole, apply filler in thin layers and sand between coats.
Large holes
Cut a neat square around the damage, fix a support behind it, screw in a new piece of board, tape the joints, fill and sand.
Finish
Prime the repair before painting so it does not show through.
