How do I fix a squeaky door?

Door squeaks are almost always caused by dry or dirty hinges. A little lubricant usually solves it quickly.

Work on one hinge at a time so the door stays supported.

Steps

Open the door, tap out the hinge pin with a nail and hammer, wipe it clean and apply silicone spray, petroleum jelly or a light machine oil, then put it back. Work the door back and forth.

Use the right product

Avoid heavy grease that attracts dust. Wipe away any excess so it does not stain the door or floor.

If it still squeaks

Tighten the hinge screws and check whether a worn pin needs replacing.
