Why are my plant's leaves turning yellow?

Overwatering, poor drainage and nutrient shortage are the most common causes.
Yellow leaves are a general warning sign. The most common causes are overwatering, poor drainage, nutrient shortage or lack of light.
Look at which leaves are affected and how the plant has been cared for.
Check watering
Soggy soil and yellowing lower leaves point to overwatering. Make sure pots have drainage holes.
Check nutrients
Pale new growth or overall yellowing can mean a lack of nitrogen or iron. Feed with a balanced fertiliser.
Other causes
Pests, root problems, sudden temperature changes and natural ageing of old leaves can also cause yellowing. Remove dead leaves and change one thing at a time.
