How do I grow potatoes?

Plant sprouted seed potatoes and earth them up as the plants grow.
Potatoes are easy to grow in the ground or in large bags and containers. Use certified seed potatoes, not supermarket ones, which may carry disease.
Let seed potatoes sprout (chit) in a light, cool place first.
Planting
Plant sprouted tubers about 10 to 15 cm deep, with sprouts facing up, in loose, well-drained soil.
Earthing up
When shoots are about 20 cm tall, mound soil around the stems. This stops tubers turning green and increases yield.
Harvest
Harvest new potatoes when plants flower, or wait until the foliage dies back for main crop. Let skins firm up before storing.
