What is a VPN and do I need one?
A VPN encrypts your connection and hides your IP address, but it does not make you anonymous or fully secure.
A VPN (virtual private network) encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a server, hiding your IP address from the sites you visit. It can help on public Wi-Fi and when you want more privacy from your internet provider.
It is not a cure-all for online safety.
What it does
Protects your connection on untrusted networks and hides your location from websites.
What it does not do
It does not stop phishing, malware or tracking by the sites you log in to, and the VPN company can still see your traffic.
Choosing one
Pick a reputable, paid provider with a clear privacy policy. Be wary of free VPNs, which may collect and sell data.
