How do I prune roses?

Prune in the dormant season, cutting out dead wood and shaping to an open centre.
Prune roses to remove dead and weak wood and to encourage new flowering growth. Do it at the end of the dormant season, just before new growth starts.
Use clean, sharp secateurs.
What to remove
Cut out dead, diseased and crossing stems first. Then remove thin, weak growth.
How to cut
Make each cut about 5 mm above an outward-facing bud, at a slight angle sloping away from the bud.
Shape
Aim for an open, vase-shaped centre so air can circulate. Remove suckers from below the graft. Wear thick gloves.
