How do I improve clay or sandy soil?

Add plenty of organic matter such as compost to improve almost any soil.
Compost and other organic matter improve both clay and sandy soil. Clay holds too much water and compacts, while sandy soil drains too quickly.
Improvement is gradual, so keep adding organic matter each season.
For clay
Fork in compost, aged manure or leaf mould. Avoid walking on wet soil, which compacts it.
For sandy soil
Add compost and use mulch to hold moisture and nutrients.
Test and adapt
A simple soil test shows pH and nutrient levels. If soil is very poor, raised beds with good soil are a quick fix.
