How do I chop an onion quickly and safely?
Use a sharp knife, a stable board and the claw grip.
A sharp knife is safer than a blunt one because it needs less force and slips less. Keep your fingers curled in a claw grip while chopping.
Place a damp cloth under the board so it does not slide.
Steps
Cut the onion in half through the root, peel it, then trim the top but leave the root intact. Make horizontal cuts towards the root, then vertical cuts, then slice across to dice.
Reduce tears
Chill the onion before cutting, use a sharp knife and work in a ventilated space.
Care
Wash and dry your knife after use and store it safely. Sharpen it regularly.
