Lesson 1

The Art of Professional Confrontation

Address behaviour directly by connecting your concerns to team productivity and project goals.

When dealing with a difficult person, detach yourself from the emotion. Don't frame the problem as 'they are annoying' or 'they are rude.' Frame it as 'this behaviour hinders the project's success.' Schedule a 15-minute private meeting. Use this script: 'I’ve noticed that when X happens, the project timeline gets pushed back. How can we adjust our workflow to prevent this?' By keeping it focused on the work, you force the conversation into a rational space. If the person becomes defensive or aggressive, stay silent for a few seconds. Silence is a powerful tool that often causes the other person to walk back their intensity. Avoid engaging in office gossip about the person. Gossip reduces your own credibility and creates a toxic environment that will inevitably affect your performance. Always keep the goal focused on achieving the work outcome, not changing their personality.
