How to make a resume for first job
Focus on your transferable skills, education, and volunteer work to create a professional resume without prior experience.
Without work history, you must shift the focus of your resume to your academic achievements, volunteer work, and transferable skills. A clean, single-page format will demonstrate your potential to hiring managers. ## Lead with skills Create a 'Skills' section near the top. Include both hard skills, like proficiency in Microsoft Excel or specific software, and soft skills, such as time management or public speaking. Be specific; instead of just 'communication', list 'presented projects to classes of 30+ students'. ## Highlight your activities Use a 'Projects and Volunteering' section to show experience. If you helped run a school charity event or maintained a sports team's social media, treat these as professional roles. Describe what you did and the results, such as 'Co-ordinated a school fundraiser that raised 500 pounds'. ## Keep it concise Use a standard template with clear headings like Education, Skills, and Activities. Ensure your layout is readable with ample white space. Check your spelling and grammar multiple times; a error-free resume is often the first test of your attention to detail. Tailor your resume for each specific job by looking at the job description and ensuring your listed skills match what the employer is actually asking for in their advert.
