How do I invoice clients and get paid on time?
Send clear invoices promptly, state payment terms and follow up on overdue payments.
Clear invoicing and firm payment terms make late payments less likely. Set them out in your contract and on every invoice.
Send invoices as soon as work is complete or milestones are reached.
What an invoice includes
Your and your client's details, a unique invoice number, date, description of services, amount, tax if applicable, due date and payment methods.
Reduce late payment risk
Ask for a deposit, break larger projects into milestones and set short payment terms such as 7 to 14 days.
If a client is late
Send a polite reminder, then a firmer one. Pause further work if needed and apply late fees only if they are in your agreement. For serious non-payment, seek advice on formal options.
