Lesson 1
Identifying Emotional Flooding
Learn to spot when your partner is no longer capable of rational communication.
Understanding the withdrawal response
When a partner goes silent, it is rarely a power move. Often, they are experiencing 'flooding'—a state where the nervous system is overwhelmed. Their heart rate spikes, their brain shifts into fight-or-flight, and they lose the ability to engage in complex, empathetic thinking. You can identify this through physical signs: avoiding eye contact, shallow breathing, or a rigid posture. Pushing for an answer while they are flooded will only trigger more withdrawal. Your goal is not to win the argument; it is to lower the emotional temperature. The mistake to avoid is interpreting silence as indifference. Instead, view it as a safety mechanism. When you notice these signs, acknowledge that the current conversation has reached a point of diminishing returns. It is not the time to probe deeper; it is time to change the environment to help your partner regain composure.
