Lesson 1
Choosing and Using a Flange Plunger
Master the correct way to seal and plunge a toilet.
The right tool
A standard flat-cup plunger is for sinks; you need a 'flange' plunger for toilets. The flange is the extra rubber piece at the bottom that fits into the trap hole, creating a vacuum seal. ## The process Put on heavy-duty rubber gloves. Ensure the plunger is submerged in water; if the bowl is dry, add a bucket of water. Insert the plunger into the drain and press down to remove air. Once the seal is formed, push and pull with quick, vigorous strokes for 20 seconds. Do not break the seal. The goal is to use the water column to move the obstruction. After a minute of effort, lift the plunger. If the water drains away, you have succeeded. If not, repeat once more. Mistakes to avoid: do not push so hard that you break the ceramic bowl.
