Lesson 1
Setting Up Your Financial Infrastructure
Separate your business finances immediately to avoid accounting headaches at the end of the year.
Open a business account
Mixing personal and business money is the number one cause of tax errors. Even if you are a sole trader, open a separate bank account for your freelance income. All client payments must go there, and all business expenses must be paid from there. This makes tracking your profit trivial; your bank balance becomes a reliable indicator of your business performance.
The record-keeping habit
Use a simple spreadsheet or cloud accounting tool. Every Sunday, spend 15 minutes reconciling your transactions. Label each as 'Income', 'Business Expense', or 'Transfer'. If you have a receipt, scan it immediately using a mobile app. Do not leave this for the end of the year. By managing your records weekly, you reduce the time required to prepare your tax return by 80% and ensure you claim every deductible expense.
