Lesson 1

Optimising Light and Position

Understand why succulents need intense light and how to spot if they are struggling for brightness.

Light Intensity

Succulents require high light levels. A south-facing window is ideal. Without enough light, they become 'leggy'—stretching their stems to reach for the sun, which weakens the plant structure.

Spotting Distress

If your succulent leans heavily to one side, it is reaching for a light source. Rotate the pot a quarter turn every week to keep growth symmetrical.

Seasonal Adjustments

In winter, the light is less intense. Move them as close to the glass as possible, but ensure they don't touch freezing surfaces. If you see the colours fading or the plant losing its compact shape, it needs supplemental grow lighting. Proper light is the primary driver of succulent health; without it, water and soil quality won't compensate for the lack of energy production.
