Lesson 1
Building Your Active Recall System
Learn to replace passive reading with active testing techniques.
Testing yourself
The primary mistake students make is re-reading notes, which provides a false sense of familiarity. Instead, stop reading every 20 minutes to close your book. Write down everything you remember on a blank page or use a flashcard tool like Anki. ## The process First, scan the material to grasp the structure. Second, create questions based on the headers. Third, hide your notes and attempt to answer them aloud. If you stumble, highlight that specific gap. Do not move forward until you can articulate the concept without looking. Aim for a 50/50 split between reviewing source material and testing yourself. This creates 'desirable difficulty', which forces the brain to build stronger neural pathways. Keep your sessions under 45 minutes to maintain peak focus. If you find yourself mind-wandering, take a five-minute break away from screens to reset your cognitive capacity.
