Lesson 1
Diagnosing the Internal Mechanism
Assess whether your flapper, chain, or fill valve requires adjustment or immediate replacement.
Diagnostic Steps
Begin by removing the cistern lid and marking the current water level with a wax pencil. Flush the system and observe the fill cycle. Does the water stop at your mark, or does it continue into the overflow tube? If it overflows, the fill valve is the culprit. If the water remains low but the cistern refills constantly, the flapper is likely failing to create a watertight seal. Inspect the rubber surface for mineral deposits or brittleness. A crusty flapper requires replacement, not just cleaning. Ensure the chain has precisely one centimetre of slack when at rest. Anything tighter pulls the flapper open; anything looser risks catching under the seat. Avoid cheap generic hardware; opt for branded, silicone-based replacement parts which resist calcium buildup, lasting five times longer than standard black rubber kits found in hardware stores.
