Lesson 1
Setting Up Your Environment
Install the necessary tools to run and test your code locally.
Choose your editor
For beginners, Visual Studio Code is the industry standard. Download it from the official site. It is free, powerful, and has extensions that help you write code with fewer mistakes. Next, install Python directly from python.org.
Your first script
Create a new file named hello.py. Type print('Hello, World!') into the editor. Open your terminal, navigate to the folder, and type python hello.py. When you see your message on the screen, you have successfully set up your development environment. This may seem simple, but mastering the terminal is the most important skill for a developer. If you encounter an 'is not recognised' error, you likely need to add Python to your system's PATH. Search for 'add Python to PATH' on your OS. Fixing these small configuration issues is exactly how you learn to be a competent software engineer.
