Lesson 1

Curating Your Niche

Select a cohesive product range that appeals to a specific, well-defined audience.

Identify Your Market Success in boutiques comes from curation, not variety. Do not sell everything. Choose a theme: e.g., 'minimalist office supplies' or 'vintage-inspired home decor'. If you try to sell both, you will lose the trust of your specific customer base. ## Product Selection Aim for 10-15 core items to start. Use platforms like Faire or direct wholesale agreements to source products. Ensure your items have a cohesive aesthetic. If a customer likes one product, they should be naturally interested in the others. ## Cost Analysis Calculate your landed cost: product price + shipping + platform fees. If you cannot maintain a 40% margin, the product is not viable for a small boutique. Focus on items that have high perceived value but low weight to minimise shipping costs and keep your retail price competitive and accessible to your target demographic.
