Lesson 1
The Purpose of Liquid Savings
Build a stable foundation for short-term needs and unexpected emergencies.
Safety and accessibility
Savings accounts act as a buffer. Their primary purpose is not growth; it is capital preservation and liquidity. You need instant access to money for a leaking roof, a car repair, or an unexpected medical bill. A high-yield savings account or money market fund is appropriate here. The goal is to ensure the principal amount remains intact. A common mistake is keeping too much cash in a low-interest checking account, where inflation erodes its purchasing power. Instead, keep 3 to 6 months of living expenses in an account that pays a modest rate of interest. This 'emergency fund' is the first financial milestone. Do not be tempted to invest this money in the stock market. Market volatility means you could lose capital exactly when you need it most. Prioritise stability over the chance of higher returns for all funds needed within a three-year window.
