Lesson 1
Securing Loose Joints
How to properly break down and re-glue loose wooden joints.
Re-gluing correctly
To fix a wobbly joint, you must remove the old, brittle glue. Gently pull the joint apart—do not force it, or you may crack the wood. Use a chisel or sandpaper to scrape off all the old adhesive. If any old glue remains, new glue will not bond effectively. Apply a high-quality wood glue (PVA type) to both mating surfaces. Clamp the joint tightly using a bar clamp. If you do not have a clamp, use heavy tape or a tourniquet with rope to maintain pressure. Let it dry for at least twenty-four hours before removing the clamp. Never sit on the chair during the drying process. The structural integrity depends entirely on the glue setting without any movement during the initial cure phase, which is a common mistake that leads to recurring wobbles.
