Lesson 1
Structuring The Honest Conversation
Use specific dialogue techniques to address underlying issues without triggering defensive reactions.
Productive Dialogue
Stop debating who is right or wrong. Instead, focus on the gap between your expectations and your reality. Schedule a 30-minute block where both partners agree to listen without interrupting. Use 'I' statements: 'I feel [emotion] when [action happens] because I need [value].' This avoids blame and focuses on personal needs. Before starting, agree to a 'time-out' rule: if voices are raised, the conversation pauses for 20 minutes to allow heart rates to normalise. During this conversation, aim to identify one 'gateway' problem—a small, solvable issue that, if fixed, would create immediate relief. Do not try to solve the entire history of the relationship in one sitting. Success here is not winning an argument; it is creating a mutual understanding of what each person requires to feel secure, respected, and heard. Write down the one specific change each person commits to for the following week.
