Lesson 1
Safe Cleaning Protocols
Eliminate existing mould while protecting yourself from harmful spores.
Protection First
Before you start, equip yourself. Wear rubber gloves, a face mask (N95 or equivalent), and goggles to prevent spore inhalation. Keep windows wide open to maximise airflow while working. Never dry-scrub mould, as this sends spores into the air.
The Cleaning Solution
For most non-porous surfaces, mix one part white vinegar with one part water. Spray it onto the affected area and let it sit for one hour. Then, scrub with a soft-bristled brush. Alternatively, use a mild detergent. Wipe the area dry completely with a clean cloth. Never mix bleach with vinegar or ammonia; this creates toxic gas. If the mould has penetrated into plaster or wood, surface cleaning may only be temporary. You must ensure the surface is bone-dry after cleaning to prevent immediate regrowth. If the area remains damp, the mould will return within days.
