Lesson 1

Looking for Patterns, Not Signals

Understand why a single smile or compliment means very little in a social context.

Avoiding Misinterpretation

We often fall into the trap of over-analysing a specific gesture, like a lingering look or a shared joke. In isolation, these mean nothing. Humans are social creatures who often mirror others to be polite. ## The Consistency Rule Look for a pattern over three or more interactions. Does this person seek you out when they don't have to? Do they remember small details you mentioned weeks ago? If they are friendly to everyone in the room in exactly the same way, assume it is their natural personality. If they treat you differently—offering more eye contact, asking follow-up questions, or finding reasons to stand near you—this is a stronger indicator of specific interest. Stop counting 'nice moments' and start counting 'intentional actions.' Someone who is truly interested will create opportunities to engage with you personally, regardless of the group dynamic.
