Lesson 1

Low-pressure outreach

Start networking by leveraging the contacts you already have within your existing sphere.

Leverage your circle

Most people ignore their existing network. Reach out to three former colleagues or classmates this week. Send a simple message: 'I’m looking to expand my knowledge in X, and I remember you were great at that. Do you have 10 minutes for a virtual coffee?'

Low stakes beginnings

Networking is not about selling. It is about curiosity. By starting with people you know, you remove the social anxiety of talking to strangers. Prepare one question for each call, such as 'What is the biggest challenge you are facing in your role right now?' Listen twice as much as you speak. Offering help, such as sharing a relevant article or a helpful contact, builds capital. This foundation of trust is how you grow a network that actually helps your career.
