Lesson 1

Monitoring and Early Intervention

Spot signs of infestation early to prevent severe damage to your garden.

Inspection Habits

Aphids congregate on tender new growth and the undersides of leaves. Check your plants every three days, especially during warm spring and summer mornings. Look for curled, yellowing leaves or a sticky substance called honeydew. Ants are another sign; they 'farm' aphids for their honeydew, so if you see an unusual number of ants on a plant, inspect it closely.

Manual Removal

For small infestations, you do not need chemicals. Use a strong stream of water from your garden hose to blast the aphids off the stems. They are fragile and will struggle to return. For delicate indoor plants, wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth. This manual approach is highly effective if you catch the infestation early. Do this consistently; repetition is key to preventing them from multiplying while the plant is vulnerable to stress.
