Lesson 1
Spotting the Early Warning Signs
Recognise the subtle signals of burnout so you can act before you reach total exhaustion.
Burnout doesn't happen overnight; it is a creeping phenomenon. Look for the 'emotional indicators': you might feel cynical about tasks you once enjoyed, experience brain fog, or find that minor setbacks feel like major catastrophes. Physically, look for disrupted sleep patterns, persistent muscle tension, or increased reliance on caffeine to function. To monitor this, keep a 'stress log' for one week. At the end of each day, rate your energy levels from 1 to 10. If you find your score is consistently low, you are on the road to burnout. A common mistake is to try and push through the fatigue, assuming it is just a 'busy week.' Be honest with yourself. If you are disengaged from work or feeling detached from your accomplishments, acknowledge it. Early intervention is the difference between needing a weekend off and needing a six-month recovery sabbatical.
