Lesson 1
Preparation and research
Gather the necessary evidence to support your request for a lower service price.
Data collection
Start by listing all monthly contracts: internet, insurance, phone, and energy. Note the exact monthly cost, contract end date, and any exit penalties. Use comparison websites to find the cheapest equivalent service from a competitor.
The leverage list
Create a document containing these three items: your current bill amount, a lower quote from a competitor, and your tenure with your current company. Having this information ready gives you leverage. Never call without this data. Knowing your contract end date is critical; companies are much more likely to negotiate when they fear losing you to a competitor immediately. Avoid checking these details only when a bill spikes; conduct this research one month before your contract renewal. Being informed turns the conversation from a plea into a business transaction, showing them you are a customer who understands market value.
