Lesson 1

The Resignation Meeting Protocol

Prepare the conversation script and timing to ensure your manager receives the news respectfully.

Strategic Timing

Timing is critical when resigning. Aim for a private conversation, preferably mid-week, avoiding high-stress deadlines or public settings. Prepare a concise script: state your intention to resign, provide the date of your last day, and express gratitude for your time at the company. Do not use this meeting to list grievances. Keep the conversation focused on the transition. If your manager asks for reasons, keep it brief and positive, such as focusing on a new learning opportunity. The objective is to maintain a professional relationship. If working remotely, schedule a video call rather than sending an email or message. Ensure you have your transition plan ready to present during this conversation. This shows you are taking responsibility for your workload, which significantly lowers the likelihood of friction. Leave the meeting with a clear next step for informing your immediate colleagues about the upcoming change.
