Lesson 1

Deconstructing the Skill

Break massive skills into manageable parts to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Map the territory. Before you begin, identify the '80/20' of your new skill. For instance, if you are learning photography, the 80/20 is exposure, composition, and lighting. Ignore the complex editing software until you master these three. Write these down as your three primary objectives. Research your topic for one hour—no more—to find the best resources. Choose one book or one course and stick to it. Avoid the 'beginner's trap' of collecting too many resources. Create a simple project that forces you to use these three skills. If you are learning to code, build a simple calculator. If you are learning to write, write one article per week. By narrowing your focus, you make your progress measurable. Avoid the temptation to study everything at once. Perfectionism is the enemy of speed. You want to reach a 'good enough' level in each sub-skill to move forward effectively.
