Lesson 1

Aligning Core Values

Identify your non-negotiables regarding finances, family, and lifestyle.

Define your pillars

Before evaluating someone else, define your own non-negotiables. List five areas that define your life, such as savings habits, dietary choices, or desire for children. Be specific; 'I want a stable life' is too vague. Instead, aim for 'I value having six months of expenses in a high-yield savings account.'

Assess their position

Once you have your list, compare it to your partner's actions rather than their words. If they value travel but have zero savings, note the discrepancy. Use a simple spreadsheet to track your shared goals versus individual goals. A healthy relationship requires overlap in at least three major life areas. If you find your values diverge on debt management or career ambition, discuss these openly before making further commitments. Do not assume they will change their mind later. Focus on who they are today, not the version you imagine they might become in five years.
