Lesson 1
Planting and Structural Support
Set your tomatoes up for success with deep planting and robust structural support systems.
Deep Planting
When moving tomato seedlings into their final spot, bury the stem up to the first set of true leaves. Tomatoes are unique in that they will grow additional roots all along the buried stem. A larger root system means a stronger, more drought-tolerant plant.
Support Selection
Install your stakes or cages at the moment of planting. Do not wait until the plant is 50 cm tall, or you will likely damage the roots when pushing the stake into the soil.
Worked Example
For a tall indeterminate variety, use a 2-metre bamboo stake. As the plant grows, tie the main stem to the stake every 20 cm using soft garden twine. Ensure the ties are loose enough to allow the stem to thicken without being constricted, which could cut off the plant’s nutrient flow.
