Lesson 1
The Secrets of Perfect Planting
Plant strawberries with precision to avoid crown rot and ensure long-term plant health.
The Crown Depth
The most common mistake is burying the crown. The crown is the central part of the plant where the stems meet the roots. It must sit exactly at the soil surface. If buried, it will rot; if planted too high, the roots will dry out and the plant will die.
Spacing Guidelines
Space plants 30 cm apart to allow for airflow. Good airflow is critical to preventing fungal diseases like powdery mildew, which can destroy a crop in days.
Soil Mix for Pots
If growing in containers, use a mix of 60% potting soil and 40% compost. Add a handful of perlite to ensure the soil remains light and free-draining. This allows the roots to expand quickly, which is necessary for heavy fruit production in confined container spaces.
