Lesson 1
Optimising Indoor Lighting Conditions
Position your herbs to receive the intense, direct light required for healthy, non-leggy growth.
Measuring Light Intensity
Most culinary herbs, such as basil and thyme, require a minimum of six hours of bright, direct sunlight per day. If you live in a region with short winter days or cloudy weather, a south-facing window is essential. If your space lacks this, you must supplement with full-spectrum LED grow lights.
Positioning Tactics
Place your pots as close to the glass as possible. However, ensure the leaves are not touching the cold glass in winter, as this can cause frost damage. If your herbs start leaning heavily to one side, rotate the pot 180 degrees every few days to keep the stems straight and strong.
Warning Signs
If your plants grow tall, thin, and pale, they are 'stretching' for light. Move them to a sunnier location immediately, as this indicates a severe lack of energy to support healthy new leaf production.
