Lesson 1
Defining Deliverables and Scope
Prevent scope creep by articulating exactly what you provide and what is excluded.
The importance of clarity
'Scope creep' is the biggest threat to freelance profitability. Your contract must define the project boundaries. List every specific deliverable. If you are writing a website, list the number of pages, word counts per page, and level of research. Do not use vague terms like 'general support'.
Excluding the extras
Include a section called 'Out of Scope'. Here, clarify that additional requests will be billed at a specific hourly rate. For example, 'Any additional pages beyond the agreed five will be charged at £50 per hour.' This protects you from 'just one small change' requests that turn into weeks of extra work. By setting these boundaries upfront, you teach clients how to work with you. If a client refuses to agree to a defined scope, treat it as a red flag.
