Lesson 1
Isolation and Safety Procedures
Understand how to shut off water supplies before repairing.
Shutting off the source
The most critical step is stopping the flow. Know where your main stopcock is—usually under the kitchen sink or near the entry point of your water line. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If you cannot reach the main valve, look for local shut-off valves behind toilets or under sinks. ## Draining the system Once the water is off, open the lowest faucet in the house to drain remaining pressure. If water is near electrical outlets, turn off the electricity at the breaker immediately. Never touch a leak if there is standing water near exposed wires. Use a bucket to catch any residual water from the pipe. This preparation prevents accidental flooding and ensures you are working on a dry, manageable surface, which is essential for any sealant to bond correctly.
