Lesson 1
Mapping Your Electrical Circuits
Locate which appliances are on which circuit to prevent overloading.
Understand Circuit Loads
Every circuit in your distribution board is rated for a specific amperage, typically 15 or 20 amps. If your total draw exceeds this, the breaker trips.
Create a Map
Grab a notepad and a lamp. Switch on the lamp, plug it into an outlet, and flip breakers one by one until the lamp goes dark. Label this breaker. Repeat for every outlet in the house.
Identify Power Hogs
List your high-draw appliances: heaters (1500W), kettles (2000W), and hair dryers. These should never share a circuit. If your kitchen circuit trips when the microwave and kettle run together, you have a classic overload. Move the kettle to a different circuit or manage usage so they never run simultaneously. This simple manual load balancing stops 80% of nuisance trips without needing new wiring.
