Lesson 1
Timing Your Weeding Strategy
Remove weeds effectively by targeting them when soil conditions are most favourable for root extraction.
Why Timing Matters
The best time to remove weeds is after a heavy rainfall or deep watering. When the soil is moist, the structure becomes loose, allowing you to pull the entire root system out with minimal effort. If you attempt to weed during dry, compacted conditions, the roots often snap, leaving behind pieces that regenerate quickly.
The Extraction Checklist
- Identify weeds before they flower to prevent seed dispersal.
- Use a hori-hori knife or a hand fork to loosen soil around the taproot.
- Grasp the weed at the base of the stem to avoid snapping the foliage.
- Shake excess soil off the roots to keep your garden bed fertile.
Common Mistake
Never leave pulled weeds on top of the soil. They can re-root or drop mature seeds, effectively planting the next generation of weeds for you. Always dispose of them in a compost bin.
