Lesson 1

Container Dynamics and Soil Quality

Understand how pot material and potting mix affect your plant growth.

Containers dictate your garden's success. Terracotta breathes but dries out fast, while plastic retains water well but can overheat in direct sun. Whatever material you choose, the volume is critical. For peppers or tomatoes, use a pot at least 30cm deep. For herbs, 15cm is sufficient. Drainage is non-negotiable; if a pot lacks holes, drill them before adding soil. Avoid garden soil; it is too heavy and will compact, suffocating roots. Use a high-quality, peat-free potting mix mixed with perlite for aeration. A good ratio is 80% potting mix to 20% perlite. This blend remains light and holds moisture while allowing excess water to drain. Before filling, consider placing a small piece of landscape fabric or a coffee filter over the drainage holes to keep the soil inside while letting the water out, maintaining a clean balcony workspace while fostering root health.
