Lesson 1
Plunging Techniques and Natural Solvents
Apply pressure effectively and use mild solutions for light clogs.
Effective plunging
Most people plunge inefficiently. The secret is the vacuum. First, block the overflow hole—the small opening near the rim—with a damp rag. This ensures the air pressure goes down the pipe, not out the overflow. Fill the sink with enough water to cover the plunger cup. Place the cup over the drain hole and push firmly for 15 seconds. Pull back with a sharp motion to pull the clog towards you. ## Using natural solutions If the blockage is minor, pour a half-cup of baking soda followed by a half-cup of vinegar into the drain. Cover the drain with a cloth for 10 minutes, then flush with a kettle of hot (not boiling) water. Avoid boiling water on plastic pipes as it can soften the joints and cause leaks.
