Lesson 1
Audit Your Professional Toolkit
Identify core competencies that transfer across various sectors to build your new resume profile.
Start by listing every task you have managed in the last five years. Use a spreadsheet to categorise these into three columns: technical skills, soft skills and industry-specific knowledge. Most professionals overlook the value of their soft skills, such as stakeholder management or process improvement. To stand out, you must map these to your target industry requirements. If you are moving from sales to project management, focus on your experience with target setting and budget reconciliation. Avoid describing your old role in legacy terms; instead, use the terminology found in your new target industry's job advertisements. This shift helps recruiters view you as a viable candidate rather than an outsider. Your goal is to create a list of five core competencies that appear in every relevant job description you find. This list becomes the bedrock of your new professional identity and resume branding.
