Lesson 1
Gathering Your Financial Data
Collect your statements to see your true financial baseline.
Collect the truth
Most people guess their spending. To build a real budget, you need facts. Download the last three months of PDF statements from your bank and credit card accounts. This period accounts for irregular expenses like car insurance or seasonal bills.
Create your master list
Open a spreadsheet and create two columns: 'Category' and 'Amount'. Divide your spending into two main groups: Fixed and Variable. Fixed costs are rent, utilities, and debt payments that stay the same. Variable costs are your food, entertainment, and shopping habits. Spend 20 minutes specifically tagging each transaction. By the end, you should see the total amount you spent on things like takeaways versus essentials. This is often an eye-opening exercise. It identifies the 'hidden' costs, such as subscriptions you forgot about, which are the easiest wins for balancing your budget later.
