Lesson 1
Defining Your Survival Budget
Calculate your absolute minimum costs to set a realistic emergency fund target.
To build an emergency fund, you must first define what an 'emergency' is. It is not for sales, holidays, or upgrades; it is for survival. List your monthly essentials: rent or mortgage, utilities, minimum debt payments, basic food, transport, and insurance. Ignore non-essential spending like streaming services, eating out, and hobbies. Sum these up to find your 'Survival Number'. If your monthly income is £2,000 and your survival costs are £1,200, your goal is to save £1,200 for one month of security, then build towards three to six months. This clarifies exactly what you are saving for. Having a concrete number makes the goal feel achievable rather than abstract. Knowing your Survival Number also helps you identify which luxuries can be trimmed during lean times, effectively making your existing emergency fund last longer if you ever need to access it.
