Lesson 1

The Hierarchy of Intelligent Systems

Visualise how AI, machine learning and deep learning fit together like Russian dolls.

The concentric circle model

Think of AI as the largest circle, containing every effort to make computers exhibit intelligence. Inside this is machine learning, which specifically relies on data rather than hard-coded logic. Finally, deep learning is the innermost circle, representing a specialized subset of machine learning using complex, layered networks. AI is the broad goal; machine learning is the primary tool to achieve it; deep learning is the advanced engine for specific, data-heavy tasks. Many people confuse these, but the difference is in the 'how'. Classic AI often relies on human-defined rules, such as 'if this, then that'. Machine learning allows the computer to derive its own rules from datasets. Deep learning takes this further by mimicking biological neural structures to interpret complex, unstructured inputs. Understanding this taxonomy helps you avoid vendor jargon and accurately evaluate which technology is actually powering the software you use for your business.
