Lesson 1

Applying the STAR Framework

Use the STAR method to structure your answers and ensure clarity during your interview.

Structure your stories

Your answers must provide concrete evidence of your competence. Use the STAR method to ensure you cover every base. Start with the Situation, define the Task, detail the Action you took, and conclude with the Result. Do not ramble; keep your response under two minutes.

A worked example

If asked about conflict, don't just say you are a good communicator. Say: 'In my last role (Situation), we faced a missed deadline (Task). I scheduled an emergency sync (Action) to realign priorities, which resulted in us delivering on time (Result).' This format ensures you hit the key points without getting lost in unnecessary detail. Practise writing out three core stories using this exact template. The mistake to avoid is vague language; always include a specific, measurable outcome that shows exactly how you contributed to your team's overall success.
